On April the 10th the Shankill Day Care Centre held a tea party to celebrate the 100th birthday of its founding member and first Chairperson, Verell Booth. It would be hard to find a person in Shankill whose name is more synonymous with community care than that of Verell who has spent many decades involved in the field.
In 1971 the Eastern Health Board decided that Shankill should have an Old Folks Association (SOFA) to host social events and outings for older people. Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and the Eastern Health Board agreed to match whatever funding could be raised for the building for these events. After just two years of intensive canvasing for donations and many collection boxes rattled by Verell and her committee, the new SOFA centre formally opened on the 15th September 1979 at Lower Road, Shankill.
Under Verell’s stewardship the Shankill Day Care Centre addresses the need to support independent living of the elderly in the community.
It helps combat loneliness and isolation by enabling friendship and camaraderie in a supportive caring environment.
Verell is very self effacing when it comes to accepting praise for all she has done for Shankill but she deeply values her many years’ involvement with her local community.
People over 60 are invited to come to the Daycare Centre and join in our Dance Theatre sessions (Monday 11am – 12 noon) and our Siel Bleu sessions (Friday 11am – 12 noon). Siel Bleu offers life enhancng exercise for older adults. Both the Dance Theatre and Siel Bleu sessions are great fun!
The cost per session is €5 but there is limited capacity, so first come, first served.
